The Great Debate: Roman Shades vs. Roller Shades

The Great Debate: Roman Shades vs. Roller Shades

If your in the midst of decorating a new home, or just refreshing your living space to something more modern — statement pieces like lighting, furniture, artwork, & rugs generally get the lion's share of the budget, with window treatments at times an afterthought.

Trust us, we’ve been there! Transforming your windows with a tailored shade or custom drape, may seem a little involved with so many options, patterns, colors, & styles out their. But, if a Roller Shade or Roman Shade is still coming across your google search, then keep reading, as we’ve got a few ideas on what to look out for when evaluating the two options.

Custom Roman Shades Vs Roller Shades

Custom Roman Shades.

  • Belgian Linen Roman shades are terrific when drapes are not feasible, especially for small windows, of if you aren’t working with large floor-to-ceiling windows.

  • If you’re looking for drama, go with roman shades over roller shades. If you have a heater or radiator in the way, the tailored nature of roman shades are a superior option than drapes. If you’re into a more layered look, it is also really nice to do Roman Linen sheers with a drape over them.

  • As with all fabric window treatments, dust does easily get trapped between the fabric layers, and is something to consider.

  • Some styles require “dressing” the pleats of the shade more often to keep it’s look.

Custom Roller Shades.

  • Custom Roller Shades are the most practical of the options. It can make a room feel like you have a second layer of texture — similar to wallpaper, but on your windows.

  • Rollers shades also look really great pulled down, making them a good option if you live in a high-rise or on a block with no view.

  • If you prefer to hide the control mechanism at the top of your shade, their are very nice encasement options, to give your window a more finished look.

  • On the contrary, roller shades or solar shades offer little insulation against the cold at the window. In colder climates, or on older, leaky windows, using a window treatment with some insulating factor (like a roman shade that uses blackout lining) will help keep the cold air out of your home.

The windows in any room often play the biggest role in how that room looks and feels. So, wherever you’re at in your project plans, don’t underestimate the impact of custom window treatments & the “wow” factor they’ll give your space.
